The rise of Chhaava and its dominance at the box office has been remarkable and unparalleled for many reasons. Starring Vicky Kaushal in the lead, the movie has been a raging wildfire over the past two weeks, not allowing any other film a moment to shine as it continued its successful run. Now, as the movie completes two weeks at the domestic box office, fans are still pouring in love. However, Chhaava has finally witnessed its first big drop—a 49.26% decline—in its domestic earnings. Read on to know everything you should about the same.
Directed by Laxman Utekar and produced by Dinesh Vijan under his production house Maddock Pictures, Chhaava is based on the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the second Chhatrapati of the Maratha Empire, who ruled from 1681 to 1689. The movie, set on a massive scale, also stars Rashmika Mandanna as Yesubai Bhonsale, Divya Dutta as Soyarabai, and Akshaye Khanna as Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. The film hit Indian screens on February 14, 2025.
As per Sacnilk, Chhaava earned ₹12 crore in the domestic market on day 14. The Vicky Kaushal-starrer now stands at a grand total of ₹398.25 crore, meaning it will enter the ₹400 crore club tomorrow. However, this marks a 49.26% drop compared to its day 13 collection. The movie had consistently been earning close to ₹20 crore on weekdays, making this its first weekday with earnings around ₹10 crore.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s epic Padmaavat, starring Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor, and Ranveer Singh, was also a box office phenomenon. The film earned ₹546 crore worldwide in 2018 and holds the title of India’s highest-grossing period drama.
Reports now suggest that Chhaava has already crossed ₹500 crore globally and is en route to surpassing Padmaavat, positioning itself as India’s highest-grossing period drama of all time.
Meanwhile, Chhaava has also been declared tax-free in Chhattisgarh. As per ANI, while making the announcement on February 26, CM Vishnu Deo Sai stated, “Chhaava is not just a film; it is a tribute to our historical traditions, courage, and self-respect. Every citizen should watch it to understand the legacy of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.” The film was already tax-free in Madhya Pradesh and Goa. With Chhaava now completes second week, it will be interesting to see what it manages to achieve next.
