The much-awaited Vikram-starrer Cobra, which was in the making for quite some time, was finally released in theatres on Wednesday. The film directed by Ajay Gnanamuthu has opened to mixed response among film lovers and critics. One of the biggest criticisms the project has been facing is with respect to its duration, and makers have now promised an updated version after trimming 20 minutes, which will be screened from today evening.
Despite the divided talk the film has opened to, it has grossed 12 crores from Tamil Nadu box office. It has earned around 2 crores each from Kerala and Karnataka while the numbers from Telugu states and overseas are said to be around 4 crores each respectively.
Cobra has thus grossed around 25 crores from across the world on day one, and is the second best opening for Vikram after Shankar's I which was released in 2015. The action thriller bankrolled by Seven Screen Studio had a good turn out across south, but movie buffs are eagerly looking forward to BO numbers on day two.
Had the movie opened to positive word of mouth, the five-day weekend would have been a big boon to makers. They have their fingers crossed now, hoping that the trimmed version would work with the audience.
Srinidhi Shetty plays the female lead in the movie which has Roshan Mathew, Irfan Pathan, KS Ravikumar, John Vijay, Meenakshi Govindarajan and Mirnalini Ravi essaying notable characters. The technical aspects of Cobra have been garnering positive response.
However, the lack of a cohesive screenplay, confusing plot and unnecessary romantic track have been receiving flak from moviegoers. The film is Vikram's theatrical release after a three-year hiatus and his second outing this year.
