Hunter Schafer, known for her captivating portrayal in HBO's hit - Euphoria (2019) alongside Zendaya, is set to take on a chilling new role in the upcoming horror film - Cuckoo. This follows her recent portrayal of Tigris Snow in the prequel -The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (2023). Schafer's versatility extends beyond live-action, as she also lent her voice to the English dub of the acclaimed Japanese animated film - Belle (2021), bringing the character of Ruka Watanabe to life for a wider audience.
The first look of Cuckoo shows a woman hears some strange noises like Cuckoo bird humming and disturbing visions, hinting at a darkness hidden beneath the resort's sparkling surface. As she delves deeper, a shocking truth about her family comes out, shattering her fragile illusion of paradise, and forces her to confront a reality more chilling than she could have ever imagined.
Instead of starting with the beautiful and peaceful side, which is typical every horror film begins showing, the teaser tries to scare viewers right away by showing the bone-chilling side of Gretchen’s walking alone in a dark place. Although it doesn't tell much about what's going to happen, it does play a weird sound like Cuckoo bird humming that Gretchen hears. She seems ready to face whatever it is, not just run away by following the noise. And someone in the background whispers something that makes it sound like there's something about to happen, and then the video ends.
A 17-year-old Gretchen relocates to a seemingly idyllic resort nestled in the German Alps with her father, and finds herself carried away with the beautiful scenarios. But beneath the picture-perfect facade, there lies a tangled web of secrets. Adjusting to a new family is hard enough, but when Gretchen meets her father's boss, Mr. König, who shows his peculiar interest in her mute half-sister, Alma, finds it a red flag, and senses something unpleasant around them. Strange noises and disturbing visions plague Gretchen, hinting at a darkness lurking beneath the resort's pristine surface. As she delves deeper, a shocking truth about her family emerges, shattering the fragile illusion of paradise and forcing her to confront a reality more chilling than she could have ever imagined.
Directed by Tilman Singer, and produced and distributed by Neon, Cuckoo will make its world premiere at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival on February 16. Later it will officially release on May 3, 2024, in theatres worldwide.
