Dashavatar is a 2025 Marathi suspense thriller film about an ageing traditional performer, Babuli Mestri. His life becomes intertwined with myth when his son's death is declared a suicide, forcing him to fight against a corrupt mining company by embodying the ten avatars of Lord Vishnu in his folktale and real life.
Specifically, the Dashavatar folk theatre, Babuli Mestri, was requested by his son, Madhav, to retire due to his failing eyesight. Babuli agrees to one final show on Mahashivratri, after which he will quit. During the service, Babuli learns that Madhav died of what appears to be suicide, but he believes it was a murder linked to a powerful corporation that wants to mine the village's land.
When Babuli begins performing incarnations of Lord Vishnu, the lines between stage and reality blur, morphing into a real-life spiritual and cultural battle against threats to his village and heritage. This film examines the effort to preserve cultural heritage from the effects of modernisation and corporate exploitation. The story involves themes of personal sacrifice, both in Babuli's performance and Madhav's efforts to protect his own home.
