The title teaser of Lokesh Kanagaraj’s first film as actor, was unveiled on Saturday, and much to everyone’s expectations, the announcement video was no less bloody and promising action. Written and directed by Arun Matheswaran, who is no new face to showing violence and bloodshed onscreen, the film is titled DC, and co-stars Wamiqa Gabbi as the female lead. If you think the title DC has some sort of connection to superheroes, you are wrong, for it stands for the initials of the lead characters; Devadas and Chandra. So, is it Arun Matheswaran’s violent twisty take on our very own Romeo’s Devdas?

Lokesh Kanagaraj and Arun Matheswaran are two filmmakers of Tamil cinema, who may have only a handful or even a couple of directorial to their credits, but have already established the type of films they are known for. Lokesh, majorly known for LCU, bloodshed, gore and violence, and gangster dramas, is now turning into an actor for Arun Matheswaran’s upcoming film. The latter is no new face when it comes to making films that are high on violence. His previous three films Captain Miller, Saani Kayidham and Rocky, have niche fans and never shied away from splattering blood all over the screen.

Now, with both Arun and Lokesh coming together, their new film DC, has been unveiled with a title teaser. Lokesh playing Devadas (a reference to our very own Indian Romeo), and Wamiqa Gabbi playing Chandra, gives a nod to the cult classic story of Devadas – Paro – Chandramukhi. The teaser shows Wamiqa’s Chandra grabbing a packet of condom (probably a sex worker much like Chandramukhi was?) as she walks out, while we see Lokesh’s Devadas wielding a knife and face full of blood. Will there be a Paro joining the duo? Is Arun’s DC a bloody take on the Indian Romeo who might after all find peace with Chandra? Or is Arun all together cooking something very different from the classic love story? Any which ways, the title teaser of DC has indeed piqued some curiosity.

There are no brownie points in guessing that DC will be a film which will hold no bars when coming to showing the action it looks to have ambition upon. Guns and roses have always been a favourite combination for content that wants to be both pulpy, niche, and unique. But here, with roses and knives at the forefront, and commercial factors like composer Anirudh Ravichander thrown into the mix, DC has got some expectations to be met.

DC: When will Arun Matheswaran’s film release?

It is expected that DC will find a release date sometime in summer 2026. It is after a while Arun Matheswaran is making a comeback, with his last release being Captain Miller which came out in 2024. While the filmmaker had earlier announced that he will helming the biopic of composer Ilaiyaraaja with Dhanush starring in it, no news about it has surfaced ever since its announcement.

Apart from Lokesh Kanagaraj and Wamiqa Gabbi, Sanjana Krishnamoorthy will also star in DC. Shot by cinematographer Mukesh and GK Prasanna on the edit, the film has additional screenplay by Arun Ranjan and dialogues written by Arun Matheswaran and Franklin Jacob.
