The wait begins! After years of speculation, Mohanlal and Jeethu Joseph finally seemed to have locked the script of Drishyam 3. While the duo has always been vocal about concluding the journey of Georgekutty, director Jeethu has said he is yet to zero in on an idea that would live up to the expectations of the audience. But that is not the case anymore, as Mohanlal has confirmed that Drishyam 3 will go on floors soon.
In a social media post, the actor, who has been letting out details of his forthcoming projects before the release of his much-anticipated release L2: Empuraan, wrote, “The past never stays silent. Drishyam 3 confirmed.”
The first movie of the franchise, Drishyam released in 2013 and went on to become the highest-grossing Malayalam movie back then, breaking all box office records. Soon a barrage of remakes followed, including the ones in Tamil with Kamal Haasan, in Telugu with Venkatesh and in Hindi, with Ajay Devgn. The film’s rights have since then been sold to multiple languages including Sinhalese, Mandarin, Korean and even Hollywood.
Though the makers had plans to release the sequel in theatres, it didn’t work out due to the pandemic lockdown. However, Drishyam 2, which was released in 2021, still managed to get the highest OTT deal for a Malayalam movie, when its direct-to-OTT rights were sold to Amazon Prime Video for a whopping sum close to Rs 20 crore, according to industry insiders.

Alluding to Mohanlal’s comment, it seems that Mohanlal’s Georgekutty could finally be apprehended for the crime he committed. While Asha Sharath and Kalabhavan Shajohn played the cops after him in the first movie, Murali Gopy played the role of the chief investigator whom Georgekutty outwits in the sequel. The casting for the third movie could also come with its set of excitement.
Incidentally, there were reports that the Bollywood remake of Drishyam 3, which has Ajay Devgn, will be shot simultaneously with the original Malayalam version. However, Jeethu had earlier told OTTplay that there were no such plans.
