Since theatres reopened in November, Mollywood has seen a glut of releases and the audience too have been flocking cinema halls, much to the relief of exhibitors and the film industry. While 2021 has been a rather tepid year due to the pandemic, Mollywood will look to start off 2022 with a bang with a bunch of exciting releases lined up in January itself.

While February will see the much-awaited mass entertainers of the Big M’s – Mohanlal’s Aaraattu and Mammootty’s Bheeshmaparvam, January has enough and more to keep fans of all genres and superstars entertained with Dulquer Salmaan, Tovino Thomas and Nivin Pauly having releases.

Here’s the list of Malayalam movies that will hit theatres in January 2022.

Super Sharanya

Director Gireesh AD will follow his super hit Thaneer Mathan Dinangal with yet another youth-centric entertainer that has Anaswara Rajan in the lead. The campus romance revolves around her character, who has a contrasting personality than what the film’s title suggests. Super Sharanya also has Arjun Ashokan, Naslen and Mamitha Baiju in pivotal roles.

Release date: January 7

Meppadiyan

Unni Mukundan’s first production venture is a rural entertainer directed by Vishnu Mohan. The film, which was shot during the pandemic, is based on true incidents and has him playing a car mechanic who faces a lot of hurdles that he will have to overcome. The multi-starrer also has Anju Kurian, Saiju Kurup, Indrans and Aju Varghese playing key characters.

Release date: January 14

Salute

Dulquer Salmaan will be looking to continue his successful run with Salute, which is an investigative thriller helmed by Rosshan Andrrews and scripted by Bobby-Sanjay duo. The movie, which has Dulquer playing a cop named Aravind Karunakaran, marks the Mollywood debut of Diana Penty and has a bunch of exciting talent such as Manoj K Jayan, Saniya Iyyappan and Binu Pappu.

Thuramukham

Director Rajeev Ravi’s period drama set in the 1940s and 50s revolves around the chappa system that prevailed in the ports of Kochi, where labourers had to fight among themselves to earn the right to work. The multi-starrer has Nivin Pauly, Indrajith Sukumaran, Poornima Indrajith, Joju George, Darshana Rajendran and Arjun Ashokan as part of the cast.

Release date: January 20

Hridayam

Vineeth Sreenivasan’s coming-of-age tale is already among the most-anticipated movies of the year. Starring Pranav Mohanlal, Kalyani Priyadarshan and Darshana Rajendran in the lead, the film traverses its protagonist Arun’s life during his college days till his marriage. Packed with 15 songs, the campus romance is sure to be a hit among the youth when it hits theatres.

Release date: January 21

Naaradhan

The success of Minnal Murali has elevated Tovino Thomas’ star status and the actor will be looking to deliver a hit with his drama-thriller Naaradhan, which has him playing a journalist and talks about the media industry. With Aashiq Abu at the helm and a script by Unni R, the movie that also co-stars Anna Ben already promises so much.

Kallan D’Souza

Starring Soubin Shahir, Dileesh Pothan and Surabhi Lakshmi, the entertainer is directed by Jithu K Jayan. Soubin reprises the role of the thief named D’Souza in the movie, which is a spin-off of Dulquer Salmaan’s Charlie. While Dulquer might not be part of the movie, the film will go head-to-head with the star’s production venture Upacharapoorvam Gunda Jayant that will release a day later.

Upacharapoorvam Gunda Jayan

Saiju Kurup plays the titular role in the wedding comedy, which is directed by Arun Vaiga. Also starring Siju Wilson, Shabareesh Varma, Shani Shaki and Sabumon, the film is a feel-good movie that revolves around a wedding and the entire story spans a single day. The film promises a lot of delightful moments just in real weddings.

Release date: January 28

Veyil

Despite the spat of controversies that has plagued the Shane Nigam-starrer, the film is finally ready to hit theatres. The drama revolves around the misunderstanding between Shane’s character of a college student Siddharth and his family. The movie, directed by Sarath Menon, also has Merin Jose Pottackal and James Eliya in pivotal roles.
