Dune: Prophecy, based on Frank Herbert’s work, is finally blooming into something very, very big. The show is set 10,000 years before Paul Atreides and tells us the story of the Sisterhood, which over time is referred to as the Bene Gesserit. We were told how the two sisters, Valya and Tula, climbed to the top of this ecosystem to never look back and became the leaders of the cult they were once students of. But the show never really told us why they were so driven to win. Episode three separates the two women and tells their stories individually to help us understand how they come together to run the Sisterhood and what motivates them to be at the top. We see Valya’s thirst for revenge, Tula’s sacrifice (which she makes not once but twice, almost, in the episode), and much more.
We first meet Valya, who has been misunderstood all her life. When she was young, the defeat at the hands of the Atreides and their accusations against the Harkonnens for things they never did made her angry. She sought revenge, but her family looked at her as a problem, especially her mother. With time and massive losses, she finally arrived at the Sisterhood’s doorstep, and her life took a new turn. In the present day, she stands against Desmond Hart, who wants to destroy her and the Sisterhood. The climax of episode three of Dune: Prophecy has Valya saying, "Sacrifices must be made. Sisterhood above all,” right before she enters her aging uncle Evgeny Harkonnen’s house, where she also meets Harrow Harkonnen, who calls her and Tula aunts. This could mean many things for the show, the most prominent being solving her differences with her uncle for something she is planning.
As for Tula, she has spent the entire episode grieving the loss of Sister Lila to the Agony ritual. However, the first frame suggests she has a plan in mind but is still deciding whether to execute it. We also delve into Tula's past, where we learn she sacrificed her love by killing dozens of Atreides, including Orry, the man she loved, to fulfill Valya’s revenge. It is clear that Tula has a heart, unlike Valya. In the present day, we see Tula secretly taking Lila’s dead body to a hidden chamber without anyone's knowledge. At the end of the episode, Tula does the unimaginable—she uses forbidden technology to bring back Lila because she feels Lila didn’t deserve to die. Will Sister Lila come back to life? What will this mean for the relationship between Valya and Tula?
