Eileen, the 2023 psychological thriller, is all set to have an OTT release in India. Based on a novel by Ottessa Moshfegh (who also co-wrote the screenplay with her husband, Luke Goebel), William Oldroyd directed the film, which will drop on JioCinema beginning June 1, 2024. Thomasin McKenzie, Shea Whigham, Marin Ireland, Owen Teague, and Anne Hathaway star in the film, which is a joint American and British production. The plot centres on a relationship between two female corrections officers in 1960s Massachusetts.

Eileen: Plot synopsis

Rebecca (Anne Hathaway), the stunning new counsellor at the prison where Eileen works, captures the young secretary during a harsh winter in Massachusetts in 1964. The revelation of Rebecca's dark secret sends Eileen hurtling down a dark road, severing their blossoming connection.

The movie had its world premiere at Sundance in January of last year, and then it later had a limited release in the US. Critics have largely given Eileen good reviews, complimenting the film's cinematography, plot twists, and the acting chops of McKenzie and Hathaway.

Cast and characters

Shea Whigham plays Jim, Eileen's father; Owen Teague plays Randy; Jefferson White portrays Buck; Tonye Patano plays Mrs. Stevens; Siobhan Fallon Hogan plays Mrs. Murray; and Peter McRobbie plays the Warden in Eileen. Eileen and Rebecca are the main characters for the majority of the story. Their friendship develops into a romantic relationship, which turns violent shortly after.

Earlier in an interview with Variety, McKenzie noted that the book's availability as a tremendous resource was a true honour. For some reason, she felt like the book had all the answers. The actor didn't think it was necessary to probe Ottessa for details on Eileen's personality. McKenzie felt a subtle sense of support, accepting the role as their own to express their unique creativity.

Anne Hathaway's reflections on the role

That they were all able to relate to each other's personas is what Hathaway finds most endearing about their work. Because of all the work that went into the book, the actor felt like she could do anything. The actor continued, highlighting specific details and descriptors in the book that addressed the authenticity of Ottessa's writing. Her favourite part was when it said, "If she seemed insincere, she was." Despite not bestowing authority upon Hathaway, it granted Rebecca authorization to exist in each of these cases.
