Eko, the Malayalam mystery thriller directed by Kishkindha Kaandam maker Dinjith Ayyathan, did not have a streaming partner on board when it hit theatres on November 21, despite the success of the director’s earlier work. Led by actors like Sandeep Pradeep, Vineeth, Narain, Binu Pappu, among others, the film opened to overwhelmingly positive response. Made at a modest budget of about Rs 5 crore, the film is said to have grossed over Rs 40 crore, making it a massive commercial success. It is now heard that the makers have struck a streaming deal.
Eko headed to Netflix?
According to reports that emerged earlier on December 18, Eko has been picked up by Netflix and will be on the platform shortly. Since Dinjith’s Kishkindha Kaandam is on JioHotstar, it was earlier speculated that Eko could also be headed there. The film team and the platform are yet to confirm this development, but reports state that the streamer reached out to the team and not the other way around and successfully closed the deal. If this is indeed true, Eko’s OTT outing may not be far off, as it is nearing the 4-week mark since theatrical release.
Shot primarily in Idukki, Eko was written by Bahul Ramesh, who also served as cinematographer. The film features music by Mujeeb Majeed, and has widely ben praised for its unique atmosphere, top-notch visuals, layered storytelling, and powerful climax, even though it has been described as a slow-burner.
