Sam Mendes’ upcoming drama, Empire of Light, has added some big names to its cast. Colin Firth, Toby Jones, Tanya Moodie and Crystal Clarke have joined Olivia Colman to lead the cast of Mendes’ latest directorial. The latter’s involvement had been revealed when the film was announced back in April this year.

According to Deadline, the Searchlight Pictures production will be Mendes’ first film for the studio that he has helmed on his own. The film is touted to be a romantic period drama set in the 1980s on the South Coast of England.

In addition to serving as director, Mendes has also written the script and will produce along with Neal Street Productions. The drama is Mendes’ first film after 1917, which earned him three Oscar nominations.

Academy Award winner Firth has previously collaborated with Mendes on 1917, albeit in a small supporting role. He also shared the screen with Colman quite recently, in the drama Mothering Sunday.

Well known for his involvement in popular film franchises such as The Hunger Games, Harry Potter and the MCU films, Jones will also appear in the latest installment in the Indiana Jones franchise.

Moodie is known for her work on the shows A Discovery of Witches and Motherland. She and Clarke have been part of the Star Wars universe as part of the recent trilogy. The latter has also had roles in Sanditon and Black Mirror. She also has a starring role in the upcoming film, The King’s Daughter.
