Fresh from Disney’s slate of animated films, Encanto is the new addition that has got fans of the genre talking. The movie is looking at a 30-day exclusive window of theatrical release before dropping on Disney+ on Christmas Eve.

Encanto, Disney’s 60th animated feature, is helmed by Byron Howard and Jared Bush. They are known for directing the sweeping hit Zootopia.

Charise Castro Smith has co-directed and co-written the film, while Lin-Manuel Miranda has done the music for the film. Lin-Manuel hit the bull’s eye with Netflix’s Vivo and was also involved in scoring the soundtrack of Moana. He has written the soundtrack for Encanto single-handedly.

The enchanting tale of Encanto unfolds in Colombia. It chronicles the story of the Madrigal family and their life in a madrigal house. The children of Madrigal house are born with magical power, barring Mirabel, who is born without any magical abilities. The children’s film takes on the concept of magic and turns it around into the innate power to set things right as Mirabel, the protagonist of Encanto sets out on an adventure to save her home when her family gets into danger, albeit being the sole non-magical child in the family.

Diane Guererro, known for Orange is the New Black has voiced Isabela, Mirabel’s older sister. Luisa, another sister of Isabel, the one on whom Mirabel can count on. Pepa and Félix, Mirabel’s aunt and uncle are played by Carolina Gaitan and Mauro Castillo an and singer-actress Adass plays their daughter Dolores.

Lin-Manuel Miranda was particular about having a ‘definitive Latin American Disney Musical and settled for Colombia as the place for the film as it is the home of magical realism “Also because Colombia is the crossroads of music, culture, and ethnicity,” Howard said.
