Tapan Sinha’s 1961 period drama, Jhinder Bondi, is considered one of the seminal works of the director. With Uttam Kumar, Soumitra Chatterjee, Arundhati Devi, Tarun Kumar, and others in the lead, the film is based on Saradindu Banyopadhyay’s iconic novel from his historical fiction collection. Sarod maestro Ali Akbar Khan composed the music for the film.

After more than six decades of that iconic film, Jhinder Bondi may be recreated in Bangla. According to sources, Arindam Sil is gearing up for this magnum opus. SVF is scheduled to produce the film, said sources. There has not been any confirmation on this yet.

Scriptwriter-director Arijit Biswas, who works keenly with Sriram Raghavan, has been working on the script for the last year. Scripting is in its final stage. It will be billed as a period piece with an elaborate scale but it will be significantly different from the original one. The cast, crew, and other paraphernalia are yet to be decided. The film may go on the floors next year. When contacted, the makers refused to comment on the project.

Earlier this year, SVF joined hands with Jio studio and together they announced five films, including Arna Mukhopadhyay’s Athoi, Srijit Mukherji’s cop universe saga Dawsham Awbotaar, Dhrubo Banerjee’s comedy Bagalamama, Mithun Chakraborty’s Kabuliwala, and Raj Chakraborty’s upcoming commercial venture. On September 8, another project, Soukarya Ghoshal’s Pokkhirajer Dim, was announced under the same collaboration. If Jhinder Bondi is a collaboration or a sole SVF project is yet to be determined.
