Director Arun Matheswaran's Saani Kaayidham, starring Selvaraghavan and Keerthy Suresh in lead roles, released directly on Amazon Prime Video on May 6. Billed as a revenge drama, the film has been garnering encouraging reviews from critics and film buffs upon its release.
Though some of the viewers have been pointing out the excessive violence in a few sequences, many argue that the raw portrayal does not appear forced in the screenplay. Moreover, Arun's debut film Rocky which released last year, too, had ample violent scenes. In fact, the manner in which many such scenes were staged received applause from many, though the film didn't become a theatrical hit.
In a recent chat with OTTplay, the two film-old filmmaker had said that he wished to make a revenge trilogy and that Saani Kaayidham and Rocky were part of that plan. When quizzed him about the reception for revenge dramas that are excessively violent, Arun said that he is aware of the limitation in terms of the genre's acceptance.
Arun explained, "Films like Saani Kaayidham will appeal only to niche audiences. Not everyone will be comfortable watching such movies along with their family members. Moreover, many people won't be interested in watching violent films by paying money."
On the change in mindset of the audience in the last two years, Arun noted that movie lovers have been exposed to various films and series that are internationally popular. "It is obvious that their taste has changed in a span of two years like never before. People are watching acclaimed content in different languages even in remote villages. Filmmakers have to come up with engaging content to satisfy them," he pointed out.
Arun's next film is with Dhanush; the latter had taken to social media to express happiness for teaming up with the former a while ago. There are already many rumours doing the rounds with regard to the movie's story and genre. Will this project, too, be a part of the revenge trilogy? "No, not at all," he said, adding that he can't reveal more details now.
