Kiccha Sudeep is among the rare breed of actors in Kannada cinema who have also made a mark for themselves as directors. Having surprised many back in 2006 when he debuted as a filmmaker with Autograph, Sudeep returned to his second vocation time and again, delivering something interesting and worthwhile each time around. His 2010 Just Math Mathalli, though not a big success during its theatrical run, has a cult following of its own today with many reckoning that the film, and its superhit soundtrack by Raghu Dixit, were ahead of their time.

Sudeep has directed six films so far with his most recent outing coming almost a decade ago in the form of Maanikya. One assumes that he, over the years, has consciously chosen to 'back-burner' his inclinations as a director so as to solely focus on acting. However, on the eve of his recent 50th birthday (September 2), his fans were in for a special surprise as KRG Studios announced that Sudeep would, indeed, return as a director very soon.

Titled KK or 'King Kichcha', the film will be helmed by Kiccha Sudeep who will star in the film in the lead role. The film is set to go on floors sometime in mid-2024, tells KRG's Karthik Gowda, adding that one can expect a slick gangster drama from Sudeep this time around.

The idea behind the title 'KK/King Kichcha'

"The film or the idea behind it demanded a title of this kind. And since the story is centred around a character, we felt we could name him Kichcha because of the connect this word has with his fans. More importantly, this is a slick gangster drama so we wanted something catchy and possibly with the letter 'K', so we chose the title KK, which essentially means King Kichcha. Arriving at this was a mutual decision because to match the stylized action that the film will feature, we all felt a title of this kind would be apt," says Karthik Gowda.

"Sudeep sir has a unique vision as a director"

Karthik shares that he and Yogi G. Raj, his partner at KRG Studios, felt that Kiccha Sudeep must direct the film because the actor had a specific vision about the central character and also the story as a whole. "However competent the other director might be, we felt that the vision that he (Sudeep) carried could be brought to life only by him. And we wanted him to feel comfortable when he was making a comeback as a director because KK is also a Kichcha Creations production which means that he has all the liberty to execute that vision," says Karthik.

How does Sudeep feel about the comeback? "He is, of course, very excited and very recently he even shared a nice quote about how he feels. At the same time, he is also aware of what kind of films are working today. More importantly, I believe Sudeep sir has a unique way of conceiving a scene and even in the past, though he has directed a couple of remakes, his films have a uniqueness about them," he adds.
