Chaithra J Achar’s first big signing since Sapta Sagaradaache Ello Side B is Uttarakaanda, the gangster flick directed by Rohit Padaki, who made Rathnan Prapancha earlier. Chaithra’s casting was the first announcement that the team made after the film officially went on floors. She plays Lacchi, in the film that also has Dhananjaya, Shivarajkumar, Bhavana, Aishwarya Rajesh, Vijay Babu, Diganth, Rangayana Raghu, Gopalkrishna Deshpande, Umashree and Yogaraj Bhat, among others. The film is being made in two parts; will Lacchi also have a presence throughout?

“I am not sure if Lacchi is going to be in both parts of Uttarakaanda, but it is, no doubt, a very important character. It is left to director Rohit Padaki as to who all will be in the next part of the tale, considering that there are so many artistes on the film’s ensemble cast. In fact, when I first heard about the actors on board, I was amazed,” she says, adding, “And I get to meet Shivarajkumar sir on set.” Interesting development, one could say, given that both the Sapta Sagaradaache Ello girls can now boast films with the Century Star. Rukmini Vasanth has Bhairathi Ranagal and Chaithra has Uttarakaanda, even though she is not paired with him.

Chaithra was given a full narration and she found the gangster drama very intriguing. “But the selling point for me, as an actor, was their dedication in doing this film. They have said it is a tale of the gangs of North Karnataka and their hell-bent in portraying it in its most realistic and raw form. Audiences will get a very unique experience of life in that belt through this film,” says the actress, who is getting trained in the dialect of the region to get her portions spot-on.

After Chaithra’s sari-clad first-look from Uttarakaanda came out, the first thought that struck was that the styling and her look was reminiscent of her both Jenny from Toby and Surabhi in Sapta Sagaradaache Ello. Is she getting typecast in those raw and rustic roles? “I don’t think so. Yes, I am playing very desi women, wearing cotton saris and mangalsutras, etc., but I am trying different things with the characterizations. All, the roles that may look similar are actually drastically different. And my next release, Happy Birthday to me will be another extreme, as I am playing a drug addict in it,” says the actress.

Lacchi, says Chaithra, is a rather vulnerable and volatile girl, who wants to be seen and heard and is not the most sorted person. Sapta’s Surabhi was a sex worker but she was sorted and composed and didn’t need attention. “Rohit has written Lacchi’s role beautifully and the justification for why she is the way she is, is something that I liked,” says the actress, who has been shooting for the film in Bijapur.
