The 2023 biopic of Ferrari has dropped on Prime Video after a slightly longer wait. The film is based on motorsport journalist Brock Yates's 1991 biography, Enzo Ferrari: The Man, the Cars, the Races, and the Machine. Ferrari stars Penélope Cruz, Shailene Woodley, Gabriel Leone, Sarah Gadon, Jack O'Connell, and Patrick Dempsey alongside Adam Driver, who plays the title role.
In July 1957, Enzo Ferrari, the man behind the Formula 1 show, was going through a tough time. His wife Laura and he started a factory from scratch a decade ago, but now it's in danger of going bankrupt. Their son, Dino, passed away a year ago, and since then, their unstable marriage has taken a beating. Even with Lina Lardi, Ferrari has a hard time recognising his son, Piero. Meanwhile, his drivers push themselves to the limit as they embark on the Mille Miglia, a treacherous 1,000-mile race across Italy.
Troy Kennedy Martin wrote the screenplay for Ferrari, which Michael Mann directed.
Christian Bale had earlier discussed the role of the titular Ferrari in August 2015. The plan was for production to commence in Italy during the summer of 2016. Concerned that he wouldn't be able to reach the role's weight requirements in time for production to begin, he left the picture in January 2016. After Paramount pulled out of the movie in April 2017, Hugh Jackman began discussions to play the role of Ferrari, with Noomi Rapace cast as his wife. The actor had already left the project by February 2022, and Adam Driver had taken over as Ferrari. His work in Logan Lucky and Marriage Story helped cast him for the role. In order to make the film, Cruz, Driver, and Mann all took a pay cut.
With its world premiere on August 31, 2023, Ferrari was one of the 80 films competing for the Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival. The film's theatrical release in the US occurred on December 25, 2023, by Neon, following an initial premiere on Showtime. With mostly good reviews, the film has made $43 million globally. According to the National Board of Review, it was one of the best films of 2023.
