Finally, MGR's dream to play the roles of Arulmozhivarman and Vanthiyathevan to come true

It was one of the dreams of yesteryear superstar MGR to make the popular novel Ponniyin Selvan into a film and play the characters Arulmozhivarman and Vanthiyathevan. Though maverick filmmaker Mani Ratnam is now busy with the same, with several leading actors from Tamil film industry being a part of it, we hear that plans are on to make the dreams of Puratchi Thalaivar come true. 

If everything goes well, the epic novel will be made as a movie and as a web series by director Ajay Pratheeb. The debutant filmmaker is the son of actress Omana, who played the leading lady in MGR's Genova which released in 1953.

Ajay had earlier directed a few ad films and several documentary films before taking a plunge into film direction. The movie will be produced by Srinidhi Ajaiy and will be presented by Eternitee Motion Krafte Hub Pvt Ltd, in association with Eterneity Star. It is said that many prominent stars from different languages will be seen playing prominent roles in the movie and web series. 

While the film is billed as a pan Indian project which will release in five languages, the web series is said to have 12 seasons and 153 episodes. The makers are planning to release the movie in three parts; it is likely to be dubbed in foreign languages as well.

The music for the film will be composed by legendary musician Ilayaraja, while art direction and editing will be handled by Sabu Cyril and Antony respectively. Baahubali fame Viswanath Sundaram and Shanmugavel have been brought on board as the visual development directors for the project. The makers also released a motion poster along with a video clip of MGR addressing a gathering in Chennai

Interestingly, Ponniyin Selvan is the story of a Chola King who went on to become the legendary ruler Raja Raja Chola. The epic novel has been written by Kalki Krishnamurthy in 1955.
