Chris Hemsworth, who typically only plays hero figures like Thor in the Marvel Studios franchise or the mercenary saviour Tyler Rake in Extraction, will be next seen as a scientist performing experimental drug trials on inmates at a titular top-tier penitentiary in Spiderhead.

The first look of Hemsworth as Steve Abnesti and actors Miles Teller (Jeff), Jurnee Smollett (Lizzy), among others was unveiled by Netflix on April 21.

Joseph Kosinski (Tron: Legacy, Top Gun: Maverick) has directed the psychological thriller written by producer Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (Deadpool, Zombieland). The movie is adapted from George Saunders' New Yorker short story "Escape from Spiderhead."

Spiderhead also stars BeBe Bettencourt, Tess Haubrich, Angie Milliken, Stephen Tongun, Mark Paguio, Sam Delich, and Joey Vierira.

The story follows Hemsworth who administers his concoctions of psychedelic drugs to these inmates that significantly alter their emotional and behavioural states.

Kosinski told Entertainment Weekly that Steve is the mastermind of the Spiderhead program. Though he has "noble intentions", "there are some darker things lurking underneath the surface with him."

The movie has a soundtrack with classic pop songs like Thomas Dolby's 'She Blinded Me With Science' and Hall & Oates' 'You Make My Dreams' that will be on contrast to the harrowing situations that Hemsworth's character Steve creates for these inmates.

Spiderhead will premiere globally on Netflix on June 17.
