Team Sardar, starring Karthi in the lead, had earlier announced that the movie will release in theatres for Deepavali, though they are yet to come up with a final update on its date. Actor-producer-politician Udhayanidhi has now announced that his production house has bagged theatrical rights of the film along with Prince Pictures which has bankrolled the project.

Udhay has been bagging theatrical rights of almost all big films this year; he had recently revealed that all the movies which he had acquired rights for fared well at the box office, except for Radhe Shyam.

The shooting of Sardar, which is billed as an action thriller, is yet to be completed. PS Mithran, who has directed Irumbu Thirai (streaming on Zee5) and Hero (streaming on Amazon Prime Video) is at the helm of the film. Rajisha Vijayan and Raashi Khanna are joining hands with Karthi for the first time in this movie.

In Sardar, Karthi essays dual roles after a long time. Siva's 2011 release Siruthai was the last movie which had the actor playing multiple roles. GV Prakash composes music for the film which has George C Williams cranking the camera. K Kathir and Ruben are in charge of art direction and editing respectively.

The makers had released a motion poster of the project a year ago which had Karthi essaying a weak, middle-aged prisoner. He will be seen in the role of a cop as well. Leading stunt choreographer Dhilip Subbarayan is in charge of action scenes of the film which has VFX works monitored by Harihara Suthan.

MR Pon Parthipan, Roju and Bipin Ragu have penned the screenplay for the movie along with director Mithran. The last time a Karthi-starrer released for Deepavali was in 2019. This time, it is likely to have a clash with Ajith's much-awaited AK 61.
