Gangs Kuruthi Punal: The Prime Video series was announced as a crime drama, with Soundarya Rajinikanth serving as the creative producer

We had earlier reported that Prime Video will be making a Tamil web series titled Gangs Kuruthi Punal starring actors Ashok Selvan and Sathyaraj. It has been over a year since the series was announced. However, no news or update have been posted about it. Recently, when OTTplay was in conversation with actor Ashok Selvan, the Thug Life star confirmed that the work on the series is no more happening.
We had earlier reported that Soundarya Rajinikanth will be serving as the creative producer for a series starring Ashok Selvan. Prime Video had also released the first look and title of the web series, starring the Por Thozhil actor. Titled Gangs - Kuruthi Punal, the series was touted to be a period action drama and was unveiled when the streaming platform released its Indian content slate in 2024.
However, since the announcement no news on the series had been out. Ashok Selvan, who was seen in films like Oh My Kadavule and Blue Star , recently confirmed to OTTplay that the series is “indefinitely paused”. “The series is being dropped. We had shot but it got dropped midway,” he added.
Gangs Kuruthi Punal was described as a period action drama, about a tale of revenge and power struggle within the first organised gang of a port city. At the time of announcement, it was said that it will be directed by Noah, who wrote along with Tamil Prabha and Prabhu Kalidas. Sathyaraj, Nasser, Nimisha Sajayan, and Ritik, among others were also part of cast.
Directed by Mani Ratnam, Thug Life stars Kamal Haasan in the lead role, with Simbu, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Joju George, Nasser and others in prominent roles. The film has music by AR Rahman. Scheduled to release on June 5 in theatres, the film’s post theatrical streaming rights are with Netflix.
