Filmmaker Gautham Menon's previous movie, Joshua: Imai Pol Kaakha , finally seems to have found a home on streaming. According to industry sources, the action drama starring Varun in the lead will soon start streaming on Amazon Prime Video. However, an official confirmation on the same is awaited.

Reports also suggest that Joshua: Imai Pol Kaakha's streaming debut may happen during the first week of April. The speculated digital premiere date of the movie aligns with existing industry practices. Most new Tamil movies make their way to streaming within four weeks after their initial theatrical release.

This trend has become so popular among the public that stakeholders blame it for the dull phase that the box office business is experiencing in Tamil Nadu. The industry fears that audiences are increasingly becoming more comfortable with waiting for a few weeks to watch new movies from the comfort of their homes, spelling more trouble for already embattled cinemas.

Tamil cinema's complicated relationship with OTT platforms

Producer and CEO of Studio Green, Dhananjayan, recently revealed that the Tamil film industry is aware of the threat that the shorter OTT release window poses to the business of cinema. He also noted that the Tamil Producers' Association has approached the Producers Guild of India to find a solution for this conundrum.

The producers aim to extend the gap between theatrical and streaming debuts to eight weeks from the existing four weeks. However, they also want the streaming partners not to drastically reduce their buying price on this account.

Joshua: Imai Pol Kaakha opened in cinemas on March 1 and garnered overwhelmingly negative reviews. The film was written off as "the worst movie" in Gautham Menon's career so far. Subsequently, the film also tanked at the box office.

Joshua: Imai Pol Kaakha revolves around an assassin, Joshua Indiramagan, played by Varun, who uses his skills to protect his girlfriend from other assassins.
