Michael Shannon will join Jessica Chastain as the male lead in the upcoming limited series, George and Tammy. Shannon will essay the role of the titular country music legend George Jones.
According to Deadline, the upcoming series will revolve around the publicized marriage of country musicians George and Tammy Wynette, the latter being portrayed by Chastain. The pair had released several albums and singles together. We’re Gonna Hold On and Golden Ring are two such popular works. Even after their divorce, they had collaborated together.
The show is based on the book The Three of Us: Growing Up with Tammy and George, authored by the pair’s daughter Georgette Jones, who is also a country singer. Tammy and George were married from 1969 to 1975. The reason for the pair’s uncoupling, among other things, were speculated to be George’s substance abuse problem. Their young daughter had suffered the repercussions of the couple’s toxic relationship and subsequent divorce, which was detailed in her book.
Chastain and Shannon will provide their own vocals for the songs on the show, which will consist of six episodes. George and Tammy is created by Abe Sylvia, who is known for their work on Netflix’s Dead to Me. Sylvia will executive produce the upcoming show along with Andrew Lazar, Josh Brolin and Chastain.
George and Tammy will be produced under the banners of Spectrum Originals and ViacomCBS Entertainment & Youth Studios. The show went into development last year.
