Prithviraj Sukumaran and Nayanthara’s Gold is one of the most anticipated Malayalam releases this year – not just for the audience but also theatre owners. It’s also probably one of the few films that has a hype around it because of its filmmaker – Alphonse Puthren.

Alphonse’s previous movie Premam was a blockbuster in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, and has hordes of audiences flocking in theatres for repeat watch. Theatre exhibitors will be hoping that with Gold too, the filmmaker continues his Midas touch.

The movie, which is a multi-starrer, is currently scheduled to hit theatres during Onam on September 8. The makers have already revealed that it’s OTT rights in several languages have been bought by the leading streaming platform Amazon Prime Video for a record price. The movie is expected to begin streaming on the OTT service after its theatrical run. While the usual window between a Malayalam film’s theatrical and OTT release is between 30-40 days, it remains to be seen if Gold will have an extended run in theatres, considering its cast and expectation.

Earlier this week, the makers had also announced that the film’s overseas as well as Kannada and Tamil distribution rights were sold for record amounts for a Malayalam movie. The film’s satellite rights have been bought by Surya TV while its overseas rights were clinched by Truth Global Films.

Gold, which also has Chemban Vinod, Vinay Forrt, Ajmal Ameer, Deepthi Sati, Lalu Alex, Mallika Sukumaran, Krishna Sankar, Shanthi Krishna and Roshan Mathew along with several surprise cameos, will also reportedly release simultaneously in Tamil and Malayalam when it hit theatres.

The movie, which is produced by Prithviraj Productions and Magic Frames, marks the production houses’ third release this year after the superhits Jana Gana Mana and Kaduva – both of which had crossed Rs 50 crore in gross earnings in worldwide box office.
