There is one line in the trailer of filmmaker Sarthak Hegde’s featurette Green Girl – “We must protect the gods, who are meant to protect us”. This more or less sums up the central crux of Sarthak’s film, an interfaith love story that follows the fallout thereof. Mayur Gowda and Sucharita headline the film, which is going beyond the festival circuit and heading to theatres on September 12.
In the film, they are Jeevan and Ameena, a much-in love Hindu-Muslim couple, in a tense and religiously divided backdrop of Karnataka. He dreams of a life with her, far away from the undercurrent of intolerance in their hometown, even though he’s closely associated with the Hindu Parishath and hobnobbing with people hellbent on perpetuating religious division.
If the trailer is indication of what’s in store, there is religious conflict in the tale. The official synopsis of Green Girl reads, “Amidst a volatile blend of religious strife, suppressed sexualities, and divine sermons in an Indian town, a teenage inter-faith couple—one of whom is innocently entangled in a fundamentalist group, dream an elusive American Dream.”
The film also stars Sudarshan Acharya, Triko, Ashwin Raghavendra, Rakshak Kulal, Jeevan Poojary, Dhruv Kotian, Thejas Gowda, Shravan C. Green Girl, according to Sarthak, was conceptualized based on real incidents he’s come across during his teenage years in Mangaluru, where couples used to be constantly harassed by moral policing groups. The anger that the filmmaker felt at this unwanted ‘intervention’ is what eventually became his 50-minute film that has done the festival rounds.
Karthik Gowda, who is distributing the film has been quoted as saying that Green Girl is the kind of story that needs to be told loud and clear. Sarthak, he added, is an unconventional filmmaker, who has presented a bold and fearless tale.
