In the weeks ahead of the next big film from Kannada, Kantara Chapter 1, there isn’t much for audiences to look forward to in theatres. There are films like Elumale, Son of Muthanna, Green Girl, Nidradevi Next Door, among others, but there’s no denying that the movie that audiences across the country are waiting for with bated breath is Rishab Shetty’s Kantara prequel. That doesn’t mean a dry spell for Kannada audiences, at least as far as OTT goes. Reports suggest that at least 2 major films that audiences are keenly waiting for will be OTT bound in September.

Yuva Rajkumar’s Ekka has been rumoured to be OTT bound since mid-August. It was initially believed that like most Kannada films, the Rohit Padaki directorial would be headed to Prime Video. Multiple release dates were mooted, but there was no sign of the film. Then, it was said that the film hadn’t made it to OTT yet because it was not going to be on Prime Video, but that Zee had picked up the rights from the makers, who had also made the platform’s latest Kannada web series, Shodha.

Raj B Shetty’s hit Kannada comedy was reportedly picked up by JioHotstar, which he had denied when news broke. Industry trackers, though, insist that the digital streaming rights of JP Thuminad’s directorial, which has the filmmaker in the lead, along with Raj, Shaneel Gautham, Sandhya Arekere, Deepak Rai Panaje, Mime Ramadas and Prakash Thuminad, among others, is with the platform. An early September OTT release is being speculated for the film, which is currently the highest grossing Kannada film of 2025.

Kireeti Reddy’s debut film, the Kannada-Telugu bilingual Junior, directed by Radhakrishna Reddy, had clashed with Ekka during the theatrical release. The film’s Kannada version, though, did not fare well, while the Telugu one had a much better outcome. Also starring Sreeleela, Genelia Deshmukh, V Ravichandran, among others, Junior is also expected on OTT in early September.

Superstar Rajinikanth’s much-hyped film by Lokesh Kanagaraj, had its OTT partner in place well before the theatrical release. The film received middling reviews, with audiences panning the director’s weak writing. The film had Nagarjuna as the main antagonist, although Malayalam actor Soubin Shahir had a more prominent villain role. They were joined by Shruti Haasan, Sathyaraj, Rachita Ram, Upendra, among others on the cast. All the south language versions of Coolie are expected on OTT by the second week of September.
