The primary and supporting casts of HBO's next Harry Potter TV series have been finalised, indicating that the network would be more true to J.K. Rowling's book series during its ten-year run. The series is overseen artistically by showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod, and it was developed by HBO in collaboration with Warner Bros. Television, Brontë Film & TV, and Heyday Films.
Over 32,000 hopefuls auditioned for the part of Harry Potter, and Dominic McLaughlin was chosen to portray the lead. He will take on the role of the naive wizard just starting out at Hogwarts. Arabella Stanton will portray Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout will play Harry's faithful best friend, Ron Weasley, rounding out the legendary three.
Seasoned actor John Lithgow will play the role of Headmaster Albus Dumbledore, a wise and enigmatic figure at Hogwarts. Professor Minerva McGonagall, head of Gryffindor House and a strict but fair Transfiguration teacher, will be played by Janet McTeer. The multi-layered Potions Master Severus Snape is brought to life by Paapa Essiedu. The much-loved half-giant groundskeeper at Hogwarts, Rubeus Hagrid, will be played by Nick Frost.
Paul Whitehouse portrays Argus Filch, the irritable caretaker of the castle, while Luke Thallon portrays Professor Quirinus Quirrell, another member of the teaching faculty. Preceding this series, Whitehouse had an appearance in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, albeit portions of his performance were omitted.
Bertie Carvel will make an appearance as Cornelius Fudge, the Minister for Magic, outside the school. Lox Pratt plays the role of Draco Malfoy, while Johnny Flynn portrays Lucius Malfoy, the patriarch of the Malfoy family. The Muggle guardians of Harry, played by Bel Powley as Petunia, Daniel Rigby as Vernon, and Amos Kitson as Dudley, are portrayed respectively.
Molly Weasley, played by Katherine Parkinson, is a member of the Weasley family. Leo Earley (Seamus Finnigan), Alessia Leoni (Parvati Patil), Sienna Moosah (Lavender Brown), and Rory Wilmot (Neville Longbottom) are among the other Hogwarts pupils. Louise Brealey portrays the role of flying instructor Madam Hooch, and Anton Lesser plays the role of wandmaker Garrick Ollivander.
Midway through 2024, the project moved from Max to HBO. Production on the series began in July 2025 at Leavesden Studios and is set to premiere in the US in early 2027.
Executive producers include Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts, David Heyman, Gardiner, Mylod, and J.K. Rowling. Along with showrunner Josephine Gardiner, the writing staff includes Andy Greenwald, Bijan Sheibani, Ted Cohen, Martha Hillier, Ripley Parker, Sam Holcroft, and Gardiner.
The Harry Potter web series will stream in India on JioHotstar (OTTplay Premium).
