While we all were so concentrated on the race between Amazon Prime and Netflix in grabbing the audience's eyeballs that we forgot another formidable OTT platform. According to the latest survey, Disney+Hotstar is the most subscribed OTT in the country. This Star enterprise owned streamer has already 2.5 crore subscribers in India.
Several reasons could be attributed to the success of Hotstar. The first one being their VIP offer; a user could subscribe to limited features of the platforms. This could mean that although they won’t be able to watch Disney+ shows or movies and some specials, they could stream a certain number of movies and shows. The inclusion of popular sports channels is another reason given for the high subscriber rate.
Also, you could take note of their strategy to provide VIP membership as rewards from shopping sites like Flipkart, this also helped their cause. Among these reasons is the common fact that the pandemic resulted in high subscription rates on all platforms.
Amazon Prime is in second place with 1.7 crore subscribers. Their cost-effective plan giving the user access to Amazon Prime, Amazon Music and Prime features in their shopping platform earned them subscribers. They are also proactive in accumulating more South Indian movies that earned them favourable reviews.
SonyLIV comes surprisingly in third place with 70 lakh subscribers. The reason for their rise is the focus on football and sports channels which earned them subscribers. They also have a cost-effective plan.
Netflix comes in fourth place with 46 lakh subscribers. However, they have got it going for them. Netflix is set to take over Disney+Hotstar, the one with the highest number of subscribers in terms of revenue. With their costly subscription rates, Netflix is even making the highest revenue than the most subscribed OTTs. Zee5 came fifth just behind Netflix with 40 lakh subscribers.
