Even though August 29 is celebrated as National Sports Day all over India, today was nothing less than ‘Sports day’ for Bollywood. The reason? Well… today was the day when the much-awaited film trailer of Ajay Devgn starrer Maidaan was released.

The film, whose premise is based on sports, is one of the most eagerly awaited films of the season. Despite the initial hiccups regarding the film’s release, the film is now being planned to be released during Eid of this year. For all those who loved the riveting trailer of Maidaan, here is a list of other sports-based films that you can enjoy!

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag
We all know what a prolific and multi-talented personality Farhan Akhtar is. Just as when people referred to him as the rockstar actor from Rock On and Zindagi Naa Milegi Dobaara, there came Farhan in the role of the ‘Flying Sikh’ Milkha Singh in the film Bhaag Milkha Bhaag.

The film, which happens to be a biopic of sorts, mirrored the various hardships which the real-life sportsman Milkha Singh underwent in his entire career in order to attain the position of a sporting legend.

Mary Kom
The very name of Priyanka Chopra has always been associated with the beauty pageant winner of being Miss World and a fashion icon, besides being a modern-day actress. Not the one to get stuck in one particular image (read ‘stereotyped’), Priyanka has always experimented with the roles that she has played on screen.

With her portrayal of the legendary sportswoman Mary Kom in the biopic of Mary Kom, Priyanka Chopra came, saw and conquered Bollywood and how! Right from her accent like the celebrated sportswoman till the time she had to hang up her boots (read ‘gloves’), the journey as portrayed by Priyanka Chopra is totally unparalleled.

M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story
Even though the seamless actor Sushant Singh Rajput is no more amongst us, but, one thing is for sure that, wherever he is... he must be extremely proud of the role that he played in the biopic of India’s Captain Cool Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Even though this film was released quite a few years ago, the film simply refuses to age in the minds and hearts of the cinegoers.

Right from getting Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s mannerisms to perfecting the helicopter shot till the World Cup award winning shot, the way Sushant Singh Rajput played the part, it was totally difficult for the audiences to understand whether it was him or Mahendra Singh Dhoni himself playing the part!

Dangal
For a country which is highly obsessed with the game of cricket and prefers to eat, drink and sleep cricket, here came a film in the form ‘Dangal’, which not just broke the stereotypes, but also went onto create records after records at the box office. Aamir Khan, yet again, went onto prove as to why he is considered as an evergreen superstar.

Be it his portrayal of being a father to proud Phogat sisters to his personal moment of triumph after his daughter wins the much-coveted prize, despite not being able to attend the winning moment, the helplessness that he portrayed on the silver screen will always remain golden in everyone’s memory!

Chak De! India
Whenever there is a mention of sports, how can the Shah Rukh Khan starrer Chak De! India did not ‘take the lead’! This was one film which not only taught true sportsmanship (or is it ‘sportswomanship’?), but also national integration in its real form. Shah Rukh Khan scored a perfect goal in the role of coach Kabir Khan, without any ‘penalty’!

The film, which was inspired by the story of the former hockey player Mir Ranjan Negi, went onto not just win hearts, but also many awards! Till date, this film stands as one of the flag bearers of sports-based films in Bollywood. A special mention to the film’s director and casting director for having chosen actors who not just looked the part, but also played the part!

83
This film, which was ‘captained’ by Ranveer Singh (who played the role of Kapil Dev), definitely happens to be one of the outstanding films which the silver screen has ever witnessed. Full marks to Ranveer Singh for flawlessly ‘imbibing’ the body language and vocabulary of the ace Indian cricketer Kapil Dev. If that was not enough, he also underwent a total ‘look change’ from being a ‘Gully Boy’ to a ‘gullible’ cricketer, whose sole aim was to win the much-coveted World Cup for our nation!

There are many milestones in the ‘repertoire’ of Indian cricket. One amongst them is our emphatic win at the World Cup which took place in the year 1983. Even though Team India was initially considered to be one of the weakest teams who could not even speak proper English, it was with pure grit and seamless determination that the players exhibited during the epic match was something that was to be seen to be believed. And for those who missed watching it live, you can relive those moments in the form of Kabir Khan directed ‘83’!
