Imtiaz Ali has been riding high on the success of his film, Amar Singh Chamkila. The filmmaker's movie starred Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra in the lead roles. Based on the life of the late Punjabi singer Amar Singh Chamkila, the Imtiaz Ali directorial premiered on Netflix. Since its release, the film has garnered a thunderous response. In a recent interview with Zoom, Imtiaz recalled watching the movie with Chamkila's family. He also clarified that he hasn't whitewashed the late singer's image.
Imtiaz Ali on not whitewashing Amar Singh Chamkila's image
Speaking with the entertainment portal, Imtiaz Ali expressed gratitude to Amar Singh Chamkila's family for not interfering in his narrative. The director said, "I have not whitewashed Chamkila because that was the point of making the film. He has done a lot of things that can be judged but I let it be like that in the film and it’s actually credit to the family that they understood it. They knew that it’s factual and they did not stop me in any way."
Imtiaz further recalled watching Amar Singh Chamkila with the late singer's family. The director sat next to Chamkila's first wife Gurmail Kaur. At the screening, Jaiman (Chamkila and his second wife Amarjot's son) and the late singer's daughters (with Gurmail) were also present. As the filmmaker was seated next to Gurmail, he feared getting attacked by her during the sensitive scenes of the film.
However, when the screening was over, Gurmail Kaur hugged Imtiaz Ali. Everyone at the screening was happy with the way Chamkila was portrayed in Imtiaz's film.
Who was Amar Singh Chamkila?
Amar Singh Chamkila ruled the Punjabi music scene from 1979 to 1988. His songs were often subjected to criticism. However, that didn't stop Chamkila from making the music he did. Unfortunately, his life was cut short when he was murdered along with his wife Amarjot Kaur in Punjab. The reason behind their assassination remains a mystery.
