Starring Vicky Kaushal, Chhaava is one of the most anticipated movies of the year, and it has managed to create significant buzz, which is expected to reflect in its box office performance. Now, fans have even more reason to rejoice, as the movie is set to release in IMAX format as well. Yes, you read that right! The makers of the Kaushal starrer have announced an additional format for the film’s release. However, this also sparks a new box office battle—this time with a re-released film. Chhaava will now compete with Interstellar at the Indian box office. Below is everything you need to know.
Announcing the IMAX release of the Vicky Kaushal and Rashmika Mandanna starrer, the makers wrote on Instagram:"Witness the courage, honor, and indomitable spirit of the Hindavi Swarajya like never before! Vicky Kaushal brings history to life in Chhaava, a tale of strength, valor, and sacrifice—best experienced in IMAX. Glory awaits. Epic battles unfold. History roars. In cinemas February 14."
This means the movie will now be pitched against I nterstellar, directed by Christopher Nolan. The English sci-fi film was re-released in India on February 7, 2025, and has already achieved a strong opening. The advance bookings also indicate a solid hold. So, when Chhaava hits theaters next week, it will need to carve out space amid the Interstellar frenzy.
Directed by Christopher Nolan, Interstellar was originally released in 2014 and stars Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Timothée Chalamet, and a stellar ensemble. The film follows a future where Earth becomes uninhabitable, and ex-NASA pilot Joseph Cooper is tasked with piloting a spacecraft, along with a team of researchers, to find a new planet for humans (as per IMDb).
The 2014 sci-fi epic returned to Indian theaters after 11 years, premiering again on February 7, 2025. After completing its first day, reports from Movie Talkies suggest the film earned ₹2.50 crore nett and ₹3 crore gross on its re-release opening day—an impressive figure.
To put this in perspective, Interstellar has outperformed both Badass Ravi Kumar and Loveyapa at the Indian box office, despite them being fresh releases. Not just that, it has also made a significant impact on the re-release trend, surpassing previous top performers in India.
Recently, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani made headlines for its re-release, earning ₹1.15 crore nett on its opening day. Meanwhile, Tumbbad, another re-release that performed well, earned ₹1.50 crore on its first day. However, Interstellar has exceeded both, earning nearly ₹1 crore more than Tumbbad.
