The most-awaited trailer of Superstar Rajinikanth's Jailer was unveiled on Wednesday. The trailer is replete with features of director Nelson's distinctive dark humour. The movie is likely to tickle our funny bones while keeping us on the edge of our seats.

In the trailer, Rajinikanth's Muthuvel Pandian is introduced as a man with a paradoxical personality. On one hand, he appears as a peaceful and humble old man, seemingly suffering from a mysterious condition and leading a mundane retired life. However, there's another side to him, a dormant force capable of unleashing terror upon the world when provoked.

Judging from the trailer, it's clear that Muthuvel Pandian is cut from the same fabric as Major Varun in Doctor. Muthuvel doesn't like to showcase his strength or appetite for great violence unless it's absolutely required.

Seasoned Malayalam actor Vinayakan seems to have played a neurotic gangster, who gets spooked by the violent awakening of Muthuvel Pandian. And goes on some kind of a killing spree. Earlier, some reports suggested that the movie tells the story of a retired cop , who goes in search of his son, a cop, who gets taken by some gangsters.

The trailer, however, steers clear of showcasing other key cameos played by the likes of Mohanlal and Shivarajkumar. One of the most alluring factors of Jailer is its star-studded supporting cast, which includes some of the biggest names from across the Indian film industry. Nelson has managed to pull off a casting coup by bringing in Malayalam superstar Mohanlal for a key cameo. The star-studded ensemble cast includes Jackie Shroff, Tamannaah, Ramya Krishnan, Sunil, Yogi Babu, Redin Kingsley, Vinayakan, among others.

The success of Jailer is crucial for Nelosn's career as he came under fire owing to poor reviews for his last movie Beast. Starring Thalapathy Vijay in the lead, Beast opened in cinemas last year amid huge expectations. However, the movie garnered negative reviews that threatened to upend Nelson's young and promising career.

During his speech at the Jailer audio launch, Rajinikanth recalled how he faced the pressure to fire Nelson, in view of the Beast fiasco. However, he also revealed that while the reviews were bad, Beast was a very successful venture for the producers, Sun Pictures, which has also bankrolled Jailer.

Given that his career was at stake, Nelson took his own time to release the creative vision he had for Jailer. Unlike Beast, he was not under the pressure of meeting the release deadline, which must have worked in his favour.

Jailer is due in cinemas on August 10.
