Jana Nayagan movie release remains in the dark, Madras High Court reserves orders on CBFC appeal

There seems to be no relief or release date in sight for the Tamil movie Jana Nayagan, starring actor Vijay, which ran into trouble with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The makers have been fighting a legal battle over the delay in getting the censor certificate, but the Madras High Court has reserved its order in the case, giving no respite for Jana Nayagan. As per Live Law, the Madras HC has reserved orders on the appeal filed by the CBFC, which challenged the UA certificate for the Jana Nayagan movie.

What is Madras High Court’s order on Jana Nayagan-CBFC row

The movie Jana Nayagan, which was scheduled to hit theatres on January 9, 2026, as the big Pongal release, continues to be in troubled waters with no release date in sight. The Madras High Court on January 20 heard the ongoing case between Jana Nayagan and the CBFC. However, after a lengthy hearing, the HC bench of Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava and Justice G Arul Murugan reserved the order with the verdict likely to be pronounced on a later date. 

When will Jana Nayagan release

The Jana Nayagan movie faced a setback when there was a delay over getting the CBFC certificate, which led to a legal battle and the inadvertant delay. Amid the CBFC row, the makers had postponed the January 9 release date for Jana Nayagan.The makers then approached the Madras High Court and the single-judge bench ruled in their favour, directing the CBFC to issue a UA certificate.

However, the CBFC challenged this order, and the makers even approached the Supreme Court. However, the apex court refused to intervene and asked the makers to approach the Madras High Court itself. The Madras HC held a hearing on the case on Tuesday but reserved the order. Until the CBFC row is resolved and a certificate is issued, the makers cannot announce a release date for Jana Nayagan.
