Japan, Karthi’s much-awaited con-comedy, was the actor’s second release of the year after the critically acclaimed Ponniyin Selvan 2. The film marked his first collaboration with director Raju Murugan, who earlier helmed films like Cuckoo, Joker, Gypsy besides an episode for the web anthology Modern Love Chennai. Japan was bankrolled by SR Prakash Babu, SR Prabhu under Dream Warrior Pictures.

Anu Emmanuel played the female lead in Japan, while Sunil and Vijay Milton too essayed important roles in the entertainer. Despite releasing amidst huge expectations and the aggressive promotional campaign surrounding Karthi’s completion of 25 films, Japan tanked at the box office in both Telugu and Tamil languages. A month after its theatrical run, Japan is now out on OTT.

Leading streaming platform Netflix has acquired the post-theatrical digital rights of Japan and decided to premiere the film on Monday i.e. December 11. The story revolves around a notorious burglar, who steals ₹200 crore worth ornaments from a jewellery shop in Coimbatore and the cops are out to find him. Who’ll have the last laugh? The film also explores the thief’s philosophy towards life and profession.

Prior to the release, reports suggested that the film is based on real life incidents and is a biopic of an infamous thief Thiruvarur Murugan. He hogged the limelight for the wrong reasons, when he stole Rs 13 crore worth jewels and diamonds from a popular jewellery in Chennai. The cops ultimately arrested him, while the thief passed away in prison after succumbing to AIDS in 2020.

GV Prakash Kumar scored the music for the film and S Ravi Varman is the cinematographer. Philomin Raj is the editor with Anl Arasu supervising the stunts. Raju Murugan, C Murugesh Babu wrote the dialogues for the Tamil version. Mahendran is the art director and Banglan is the production designer respectively.
