The highly awaited collaboration between Atlee and Shah Rukh Khan finally got its title recently in the form of Jawan. The film, which had been the talk of the town for quite a while now, also unveiled its teaser which saw Khan in quite an intriguing avatar. But it seems that fans spotted similarities in Khan’s look with another film, Liam Neeson’s Darkman.
Jawan’s teaser saw Khan in a very intense look, most of his battered face wrapped in bandages. Many viewers pointed out that it looked very similar to Darkman, where Neeson’s character has his disfigured face wrapped in bandages.
Many alleged that Jawan was ‘copied’ from the 1990 Hollywood film, sharing side-by-side stills from both the films.
While some said that the Atlee directorial seemed to be ‘inspired’ from Darkman, others were less than kind and called the former an outright copy of the latter. Writing ‘Week full of Hollywood copies’, one user said that while Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha was a ‘copy’ of Forrest Gump, Jawan’s teaser seemed to be a ‘copy’ of Darkman. Another user even compared Jawan to the DC character Hush. Yet another user talked about how Jawan would ‘alter the plot story somewhat in the middle’ but the ‘overall shape’ would look like a copy in the end.
There were many who expressed their outrage at Bollywood as well, referring to the industry as ‘copywood’.
A few voices also tried to defend the Atlee directorial, saying that allegations were ‘ridiculous’.
The upcoming film also stars Nayanthara as the female lead and marks the Bollywood debuts of both the actress and Atlee. The film is bankrolled by Red Chillies Entertainment.
Jawan is slated for release on June 2, 2023 in the languages of Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada.
