After much anticipation, rumors, and speculation, the day has finally arrived—JioStar has officially completed its merger between JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar, unveiling JioHotstar. This morning, India woke up to one of the most awaited mergers of the past year as JioStar announced and executed the transition. Now that JioHotstar integrates content from both platforms into one, there’s widespread curiosity and confusion about what the future holds for this streaming giant. To clear things up, here’s everything you need to know.

JioStar Launches JioHotstar

The journey began in 2024 when Reliance Industries and Disney finalized their highly anticipated merger, forming JioStar. Valued at a staggering $8.5 billion, the deal combined Disney’s Star India with Reliance’s Viacom18 and their respective streaming platforms. While the country had been eagerly awaiting this transition, certain roadblocks caused delays. However, JioHotstar is now finally a reality.

According to data, JioHotstar, which launched on February 14, boasts nearly 300,000 hours of content and a user base exceeding 500 million. With an extensive content library, there’s something for everyone. The biggest upcoming attraction is the Indian Premier League (IPL), which is set to kick off soon. By bringing together major digital entertainment streams under one roof, JioHotstar is set to make a significant impact, raising the bar of competition for existing giants like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.

What Do JioHotstar Subscriptions Look Like?

JioHotstar aims to make premium content more affordable and accessible to the masses. The platform offers competitively low subscription fees compared to other major streaming services. Plans start at Rs 149 for three months and Rs 499 per year for a single device. For multiple devices, the pricing is Rs 499 for three months and Rs 1,499 per year for up to four screens.

As of now, there’s no confirmation on whether JioHotstar will introduce a rental service like Amazon Prime Video. However, its pricing remains significantly more affordable than Netflix's Rs 199 single-device plan and Amazon Prime Video’s Rs 299 monthly subscription, which has no device limitations.

JioHotstar Content Strategy

JioHotstar is committed to an ambitious content strategy, planning to release 2-3 original series every month, a major marquee title each month, and 1-2 new movies per quarter. With content spanning Disney, Marvel, HBO, DCU, Warner Bros, NBCUniversal Peacock, and Discovery, the platform is gearing up to be a dominant force in the streaming space.

The platform is also expanding its focus on regional content, with 40-50 originals specifically for South Indian markets. "Last year, we produced around 500 hours of content in regional languages. This year, we’re increasing that to 1,100 hours," said CEO Kevin Vaz. Additionally, reality TV fans can expect Bigg Boss and other popular reality shows in multiple languages.

What Is Sparks?

JioHotstar is also stepping into the short-form content space with the launch of Sparks, which went live on February 14. This section features India’s top digital creators, offering original web series and episodic content. Sparks provides creators with greater creative freedom and IP-based opportunities for multi-episode storytelling.

Some of the initial shows on Sparks include:

  • Game of Creed
  • Love Life Lafde
  • Engaged: Roka Ya Dhokha
  • Victim Ya Victor
  • Yeh Kya Bana Diya
  • Marvel & DC Under One Roof

A major highlight of JioHotstar is the merging of Marvel and DC content onto a single platform. Previously, Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) content was exclusive to Disney+ Hotstar, while DCU films and shows were on JioCinema. Now, both franchises will be available together under JioStar, allowing fans to stream Avengers and Justice League on the same platform. Titles like Superman and Fantastic Four: First Steps will also be accessible in one place—an unprecedented move in streaming history.

    The Transition

The transition is now complete—JioCinema is no longer operational and will redirect users to JioHotstar. The Disney+ Hotstar app has been fully rebranded as JioHotstar, where all content is now available.
