Jude Anthany Joseph's Malayalam film 2018: Everyone is a Hero, which revived Oscar hopes by being shortlisted for Best Film, was not able to make it to the 96th Academy Awards nominations once more. The official Oscar nomination list was unveiled on January 23.

The filmmaker, who had previously expressed regret to the public for the movie's elimination from the Best International Feature shortlist, has not commented on the recent update.

He mentioned in December that the Oscar shortlist had been announced, and regrettably, out of 88 foreign films, 2018—Everyone Is A Hero had not made it into the final 15. He wrote, “I sincerely apologise to all my well-wishers and supporters for disappointing you all,” in a social media post.

There were mixed reactions to the film's Oscar submission, with some people being pleased that a Malayalam film had a shot at winning such an important award. A lot of people had also stated that other films, such as Vidhuthalai 1, ought to have been in the running for this honour. The list of worthy Malayalam films can also include Mammootty's Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam.

Other films that have been nominated for the Best Film category

The Hindi film 12th Fail was one of the 265 films that made the shortlist for the Best Film category. It has not, however, received a nomination for the award either. Bradley Cooper's Maestro, Cillian Murphy's Oppenheimer, Lily Gladstone's Killers of the Flower Moon, and Margot Robbie's Barbie are among the nominees.
