After a cryptic post about going missing, Abhishek Bachchan has officially announced his next film, Kaalidhar Laapata, a Z5 (OTTplay Premium) original film. Premiering on July 4, 2025, the film is the Hindi version of the highly praised 2019 Tamil film K.D. (also called KD Engira Karuppudurai).
The original's director, Madhumita, is also helming this film. Aside from Umesh KR Bansal and Pragati Deshmukh, Kaalidhar Laapata is supported by Nikkhil Advani, Monisha Advani, Madhu Bhojwani, Emmay Entertainment and Zee Studios.
The first official poster was released alongside the announcement, and it portrays Abhishek Bachchan in an avatar he has never been seen in before—rugged, older, and sitting on a branch next to a young boy, played by Daivik Baghela. Visuals and atmosphere imply a rural background and a story with a lot of emotional depth. Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, who plays a supporting role, is also joining the cast.
Abhishek posted on his Instagram to announce the film, captioning it in both Hindi and English: "चर्चाओं पर अब फुल स्टॉप! Sometimes, getting lost isn’t a detour; it’s where the real story begins. Full of dreams, twists, and the people who make it worth it. #KaalidharLaapata premieres 4th July, only on #ZEE5."
Both fans and colleagues in the industry had positive things to say about the post. "Looking so good. Never seen you like this," filmmaker Anurag Kashyap commented, praising Bachchan's dramatic look.
The protagonist of K.D. is a dying 80-year-old man who, upon learning his loved ones plan to take his life, flees from them. In the process, he befriends an energetic eight-year-old boy, and the two of them set out on an adventure full of surprises and new experiences. It would appear that Kaalidhar Laapata has managed to adapt the original for a Hindi-speaking audience while preserving its essence.
This endeavour is another way that Z5 is strengthening its original Hindi film repertoire. Exclusive to the OTT platform, Kaalidhar Laapata is set to begin streaming on July 4.
