Two months ago, when Kannada filmmaker R Chandru and his team of Kabzaa released the first song from the film in the run-up to its theatrical outing, there was massive anticipation, given the build up he had been creating for the movie as the next big thing from Kannada cinema. When the lyrical video of the song – Kabzaa title track – came out, though, there were brickbats galore for music director Ravi Basrur, with audiences dubbing it a rejected version of a KGF song. The elaborate use of Hindi lyrics also did not pass muster with them.
For the most part, audiences said that the Kabzaa title track sounded like some version of Toofaan and Salaam Rocky Bhai. The reason many thought that this was a rejected version of a KGF track was because it includes a portion with the singers singing Bhai Bhai in unison, as well as a female vocal portion. Basrur was panned for the lack of novelty in the music for Kabzaa, which then led to a hilarious meme-fest on social media. Several netizens pointed out that Basrur’s repertoire seemed severely limited, what with KGF1,KGF2, Madhagaja and Kabzaa all sounding so similar that it was difficult to tell them apart. Interestingly, Basrur’s also used the same vocal talents for both KGF and Kabzaa.

There were some, though, who were willing to give the composer the benefit of the doubt that Kabzaa’s title track was different after all. But then, last evening, the team released the full video and that should definitively convince audiences of the glaring similarity between KGF and Kabzaa.
Meanwhile, Kabzaa dropped on Amazon Prime Video on April 14, less than a month after its theatrical release. The film had opened to overwhelmingly negative reports, yet the team remained bullish that it was performing well at the box office. While no official figure has been forthcoming, the team claims the film is a success, with Chandru declaring that Kabzaa 2 would be even bigger and better.
