The trailer for director Todd Phillips's upcoming film, Joker: Folie à Deux, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, was unveiled on Wednesday to a rousing response. Fans of DC Comics seem to be really digging the pensive vibe that Todd is hoping to create with his interpretation of one of the greatest comic book villains ever created.
On the other hand, fans of Tamil superstar Kamal Haasan were also quick to notice a moment in the mood-heavy trailer, which serves as a throwback to the cult classic Aalavandhan.
At the end of the trailer, Lady Gaga's Harley Quinn draws a smile with her lipstick on a window glass. The camera pulls back, lining up Joker's face against the smiley lips, seamlessly merging them for a perfect shot. Remember Heath Ledger's Joker from The Dark Knight? He keeps asking his victims whether they would like to know how he got the scars on his face. It seems Todd will put an end to that mystery.
Kamal Haasan did it first!
That scene has become the highlight of the entire trailer. While audiences marvel at the director's ingenuity, fans of Kamal Haasan are proud that their favourite movie icon came up with such a creative interpretation of a character's turmoil over two decades ago.
In a compelling scene in Aalavandhan, Kamal's Nandu, in a moment of sheer regret and pain, draws a sad face on a photo frame, and moments later lines up perfectly against it, capturing the layers of his emotional troubles in just a single shot.
Aalavandhan is also believed to be the inspiration behind Hollywood director Quentin Tarantino's use of anime sequences to soften the impact of violent scenes in his movie Kill Bill.
Aalavandhan is one of the most underrated gems in Kamal's career. When the film was initially released in cinemas in 2001, it was met with a disappointing response from audiences. It also failed to succeed commercially. However, over the years, the film's reputation has grown significantly and has gained a cult following.
