Earlier today, the first trailer of the sequel to 2019’s Joker, Joker Folie A Deux came out. The film, directed by Todd Phillips, is a musical, with popstar and occasional actress Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn joining Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck to create mayhem in Gotham City. From exploring how Arthur and Dr Harleen Quinzel meet at Arkham Assylum, fall in love, and take off, as she becomes his accomplice, Harley Quinn.
The trailer, of course, has gone viral, with netizens excited about the prospects of the film as a musical. Interestingly, Oscar-winner Joaquin Phoenix is not the talking point of most of the online discussions on social media; it’s Lady Gaga and her turn as Harley Quinn that’s the buzz. From comments that casting her was the best decision ever, that she’s channelling the chaotic energy of Harley Quinn perfectly, to the possibility of her winning an Oscar for the role, lot is being said about the superstar songstress.
Joker Folie A Deux derives its title from a psychiatric condition in which a delusion or mental illness is shared by two people in close association. With the film set to release in theatres on October 4, netizens are hoping that Harley Quinn is the catalyst driving Arthur into ‘trouble’, with her and not him being the real bad guy in the tale.
As a musical, the film is expected to have as many as 15 numbers, most of which will be covers of popular numbers, including What the World Needs now is Love (1965), as featured in the trailer. Joaquin Phoenix won an Oscar for his role as Arthur Fleck in the original movie, one of the two wins it had from its 11 nominations. Joker was also a phenomenal box office success, grossing over USD 1 billion world wide.
