As expected, Kamal Haasan-starrer Vikram opened to phenomenal response from movie lovers after it was dropped on Disney+ Hotstar on July 8. The Lokesh Kanagaraj directorial, which was released in theatres on June 3, had smashed several records left, right and centre.
Now, Hotstar has announced that the action thriller has had the biggest opening weekend ever on its platform. The tweet from its social media handle read, " The highest ever opening weekend viewership, subscription and watch time on Disney+ Hotstar (sic)." This doesn't come as a surprise, given the magnitude of success the film earned from movie halls.
Interestingly, the movie is still attracting audiences in Tamil Nadu, especially on weekends. Vikram went on to become the highest grossing project in the state and surpassed many records set by films of other stars. It also marked the grand comeback of Kamal Haasan after a four-year hiatus.
The veteran himself has bankrolled the film under his home banner Raaj Kamal Films International. The background score by Anirudh, action choreography by Anbariv, cinematography by Girish Gangadharan, editing by Philomin Raj and performances from actors garnered unanimous positive response from critics and movie goers.
Vijay Sethupathi, Fahadh Faasil, Gayathrie, Narain and Chemban Vinod among others played pivotal characters in the movie which also has an effective cameo by Suriya. A sequel to the movie has already been announced by Lokesh, and fans are hoping that the project would go on floors in 2023.
Kamal Haasan's association with Hotstar is nothing new; all the five seasons of the hit show Bigg Boss Tamil which were hosted by him are streaming on the OTT platform. The latest format among them, Bigg Boss Ultimate, had live streaming as well.
