The trend of re-releasing old blockbusters seems to have taken over theatres in Tamil Nadu. According to industry sources, stakeholders are now planning a grand re-release for Tamil superstar Kamal Haasan's iconic movie Indian.

The re-release of Indian will reportedly take place towards the end of May. This move can be seen as a strategic effort by producers to reignite audience excitement ahead of the release of Indian 2.

Indian 2 is scheduled to hit screens in June, though the filmmakers have not confirmed its actual release date. The sequel to the 1996 blockbuster faced several obstacles during its long production. The film commenced filming in 2019 but came to a halt in February 2020 due to a tragic accident on set that claimed the lives of three crew members.

The outbreak of the pandemic and director Shankar's fallout with the film's producers, Lyca Productions, led to a production limbo for Indian 2. Shankar eventually resumed shooting in 2022, with Red Giant Movies joining as a new producer.

Reports suggest that Shankar has also managed to shoot Indian 3 during the second phase of production.

Indian is now streaming on...

Indian is a riveting political thriller that catapulted Shankar into prominence in the Indian film industry early in his directorial career. Starring Kamal Haasan in dual roles, the film portrays the contrasting ideologies of a righteous vigilante and a corrupt bureaucrat. The film's narrative centred around the fight against corruption and injustice, is elevated by its intense action sequences and thought-provoking dialogues.

While Indian is available for streaming, it's unlikely to deter producers from re-releasing it in cinemas. The film is currently streaming on Aha Tamil and OTTplay Premium.

With all Tamil major releases being postponed till the end of Lok Sabha elections, the trend of re-release has come to the rescue of theatres in Tamil Nadu. Ghilli has created a record with its excellent performance at the box office. It remains to be seen whether Indian can repeat it.
