A few days after the theatrical release of Tovino Thomas and Keerthy Suresh’s latest film Vaashi, rumours were rife that Bollywood star Kangana Ranaut’s production house Manikarnika Films was in talks with the producers of the Malayalam film for its remake rights.

Vaashi, which hit theatres on June 17, revolves around two ambitious lawyers, who are a couple pitted against each other in their first big case as they strive to prove themselves. The ramifications the case proceedings have on their personal lives form the plot of the movie, which is helmed by actor-turned-filmmaker Vishnu G Raghav. Tovino and Keerthy play the lawyers in the movie, which is a family-cum-courtroom drama.

When OTTplay got in touch with the film’s producer G Suresh Kumar, whose Revathy Kalamandirr had bankrolled the movie, he told us that rumours about the film’s Bollywood rights being sold were untrue. “No one has so far got in touch with me,” he said. The movie’s director Vishnu too tells us the same. “I doubt that the remake rights have been sold or there has been discussions about the same with Kangana. If there has been, I have not been informed,” Vishnu explained.

The film’s digital and satellite rights, though, have been sold. A senior source from the film’s production team told OTTplay exclusively that the streaming rights of Vaashi has been snapped up by Netflix for a record sum of Rs 10 crore. The movie is expected to drop on the streaming platform after its theatrical run in July or August. This is the second successive Tovino-starrer that will have its OTT premiere on Netflix, which had also bought the rights for the Minnal Murali actor’s mystery drama Dear Friend.

Meanwhile, Kangana’s Dhaakad is all set to get its OTT release on ZEE5 on July 1. The spy thriller, which also has Arjun Rampal, is directed by Razneesh Ghai.
