Kerala Crime Files will be Disney+ Hotstar’s first-ever Malayalam web series
Malayalam actors Lal and Aju Varghese are all set to star in Disney+ Hotstar’s first-ever Malayalam web series, which is titled Kerala Crime Files. The makers dropped the first teaser from the series, which is helmed by Madhuram and June director AAhammed Khabeer and is written by Ashiq Aimar.
The teaser sets the backdrop of the series, which is an investigative crime thriller, and revolves around a team of cops led by Aju and Lal’s characters as they set about to track down a killer. The sole clue to go by, however, is a fake address – ‘Shiju, Parayil Veedu, Neendakara’.
Apart from Aju and Lal, the series has a host of relative newcomers as part of the cast. Hesham Abdul Wahab has composed the music for the series, which has cinematography by Jithin Stanislaus and editing by Mahesh Bhuvanend.
The team had wrapped up shooting of the series earlier this year. In an earlier interview with OTTplay, Rahul, who is its showrunner, told us that it’s an investigative police procedural spanning six episodes. While the makers are yet to officially announce its release date, OTTplay has learnt that the streaming platform is planning to premiere the show, which is inspired by true events, in June 2023.
Kerala Crime Files was extensively shot in Kollam, Kottayam and Kochi. “Most of the characters are part of the police team, but there are other familiar artistes who play supporting roles. Close to 70 actors are part of the movie. It’s done on a decent scale too,” said Rahul, who is also producing a web series for Sony LIV titled Jai Mahendran , which has Saiju Kurup in the lead along with Suhasini, Miya and Suresh Krishna as part of the cast.
Kerala Crime Files marks the first of the several Malayalam web series that Disney+ Hotstar has greenlit this year, apart from Deepu Pradeep-scripted comedy that has Nikhila Vimal and Sunny Wayne in the lead.
