Kiran Rao recently earned appreciation for her directorial venture, Laapata Ladies. It was backed by the actor and her ex-husband Aamir Khan. In a recent interview, the filmmaker spoke about being criticised after she got married to Aamir in 2005. Rao said that she heard all kinds of things in her youth. However, she stopped caring about comments like 'Aamir Khan ne kis chashmish aurat se shaadi kar li hai' beyond a point.

Going down memory lane, Kiran Rao told Sucharita Tyagi that she developed a thick skin after all the nasty statements that came her way after marrying Aamir Khan in 2005. The filmmaker said, "I don’t even know what scrutiny I’m under because I don’t even read all this. And I feel like that’s a healthy way to live your life. Because there’ll always be people who find you odd-looking and strange and ask, ‘Aamir Khan ne kis chashmish aurat se shaadi kar li hain’."
Kiran added that gossip around her increased after she and Aamir announced their divorce. It drew more attention because of their friendly equation after separation. Rao stated that women have been consciously or unconsciously raised to be non-confrontational. "Be seen but not heard, that kind of thing. So, it’s important to have these conversations," added Kiran.

For the uninitiated, Kiran got married to Aamir in 2005. They announced their separation in 2021. Despite parting ways, they continue to co-parent their son, Azad. Kiran also attended Aamir's daughter (from first wife Reena Dutta) Ira Khan's wedding festivities. She performed with Aamir and Azad at one of Ira's pre-wedding functions.
On the work front, Kiran's film Laapata Ladies earned a lot of critical acclaim. However, the film couldn't register good figures at the box office. The film hit the silver screen on March 1, 2024. The movie was written by Biplab Goswami, Divyanidhi Sharma and Sneha Desai.
