The makers of Kingdom have issued a note of apology after the Vijay Deverakonda-starrer action drama drew criticism from a section of Tamils for showing the Sri Lankan Tamil ethnicity in a bad light. Kingdom is written and directed by filmmaker Gowtam Tinnanuri.
Kingdom makers issue apology
Kingdom, starring Vijay Deverakonda, is a Telugu action drama that released in theatres last week. The film, a spy action drama, is about a police constable who is sent on a secret mission to Sri Lanka to capture a dangerous criminal. Upon its release, the film got middling reviews, but also drew flak from a few who criticised the film for showing the Sri Lankan Tamils in a negative light.
Amid this, the Kingdom makers issued a note of apology. Sithara Entertainments, which backed Kingdom, issued a note saying, "We respect the sentiments of the Tamil people and we promise that there are no such scenes which are involved in the movie that resembling to hurt the sentiments of the local state people," the statement said. Further, the statement added that the story is fictional and imaginary, with the disclaimer stating so. However, the statement concluded that they regretted if the sentiments were hurt and requested support for the film.
For the uninitiated, Kingdom showed Tamils in Sri Lanka enslaving the Telugu population, which has left the ethnic group disappointed over the film.
Kingdom box office collection
Kingdom, also starring Bhagyashree Borse and Satya Dev, has been having a lukewarm response at the box office and has grossed over Rs 78 crore as of now. One might expect that the film's earnings might soon drop further, given Rajinikanth and Nagarjuna-starrer Coolie will release in a week. The film has music by Anirudh Ravichander. A sequel to the film is expected to be made at a later stage.
