Kiran Rao made a sparkling debut back in 2010 with the hyperlink drama Dhobi Ghat but for some reason, that film remained her only credit thus far in the capacity of a director. But the year 2023 is set to change that because she promises a returns the fore with another super enterprising tale that carries an equally quirky, intriguing title of 'Laapataa Ladies'.

Laapataa Ladies will premiere at the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival or TIFF which will be held between September 7 and September 17. Kiran Rao's film is set to have its world premiere at this year's TIFF as part of the 'Centerpiece' programme, making it her second outing at the festival following Dhobi Ghat's selection back in 2010. Her latest film is a joint production of Aamir Khan Productions and Jio Studios.

The other Indian films screened at TIFF 2023 are the Bhum Pednekar starrer Thank You For Coming (Gala Presentations), Honey Trehan's Punjab '95 starring Diljit Dosanjh, Arjun Rampal & Geetika Vaidya Ohlyan, Anand Patwardhan's documentary Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam/The World is Family, Nikhil Nagesh Bhat's Kill (co-produced by Karan Johar, Guneet Monga, Achin Jain and Apoorva Mehta), Sthal/A Match and Dear Jassi.

Laapata Ladies gets a theatrical release date

But more importantly, the film will soon make its way into theatres and the makers took to social media to announce that Laapataa Ladies is all set to arrive on the first Friday of 2024. The film will arrive in cinemas on January 5, 2024.

Unlike in Dhobi Ghat, which is best described as a poignant look at the sprawling metropolis that Mumbai is, Kiran Rao shifts her gaze to rural India in Laapataa Ladies with the story set in 2001. As described by TIFF's official social media handle, the new film is centred around a 'jolly mess' when two young brides hilariously entwined in a riot of mistaken identities. The cast of the film includes Sparsh Srivastav, Pratibha Ranta, Nitanshi Goel, Ravi Kishan, Chhaya Kadam and several others.

Biplab Goswami is credited with the original story with Sneha Desai writing the screenplay and dialogues and Divyanidhi Sharma penning the additional dialogues.

Ram Sampath, who was previously worked with Aamir Khan Productions on films like 'Talaash: The Answer Lies Within' and 'Delhi Belly', is the music composer of Laapata Ladies with Vikash Nowlakha handling cinematography.
