Kolai, the Vijay Anthony-starring psychological thriller, has found its Hindi-dubbed version making its way to OTT. Titled Hatya, the Balaji K. Kumar-directed film is currently streaming on SonyLIV. Ritika Singh and Meenakshi Chaudhary are also among the main actors in the movie. Not only did the film bomb at the box office, but critics gave it mixed to bad reviews.
In the film, investigators find musician and model Leila dead in her own apartment. The rest is your typical murder mystery, complete with suspects like Sathish, Arjun, Aditya Kaushik (a marketing agent in Bombay), and Babloo (a robber). Five men, each with their own motives, murdered Meenakshi Chaudhary in her flat. Ritika Singh, a new police officer, takes on the task of solving the murder case. Her boss wants her to recruit her mentor and renowned detective, Vijay Antony, for an investigation. The remaining tale reveals that both she and Vijay Antony succeed in solving the mystery.
The director claims the film is a palimpsest of another one, Another Life (2001), and it is based on a real event that occurred in New York in 1923 involving Edith Thompson and Frederick Bywaters.
Meanwhile, during an interview with South First, Balaji shared that his heart goes out to everyone involved in making Kolai. It was his goal to create a film that would have a global audience. The filmmaker explained that this is why they went for a more refined aesthetic. Balaji noted that audiences in other parts of the world often perceive Indian cinema as heavily focusing on poverty. India also has a rich side, but few people know about it. The cultural legacy is incredibly extensive, and his goal was for Kolai to be a hit all over the world.
The original Tamil version, Kolai, is currently streaming on Prime Video.
