We all witnessed a few glimpses of the world of Kriti Sanon, Pankaj Tripathi and Sai Tamhankar starrer Mimi a few days back when the film’s trailer was released on July 13. Now, the movie, which was scheduled to have a direct-to-OTT release on July 30, released late evening on July 26, i.e., four days earlier than the actual release date , in order to give an early birthday present to the leading lady Kriti Sanon. Mimi is now available to stream on Netflix and Jio Cinema.
While the makers have maintained that the film has been released earlier as a surprise, ahead of Kriti Sanon’s birthday (on July 27), rumour mills have been busy churning that it was done as a damage control measure. Why do they say so? Well, apparently, the pirated versions of Mimi were leaked on Telegram and Torrent websites earlier on Monday, July 26, as per a report by The Quint. The film was supposed to have a theatrical release initially. However, the makers opted for a direct-to-OTT release, considering the pandemic.
This isn’t the first time that the makers of an OTT project released it earlier than the scheduled date. Earlier, Amazon Prime Video too had released their much anticipated show The Family Man season 2 a few hours earlier than the schedule, following reports of the show being leaked online.
Directed by Laxman Utekar, Mimi is the story of a woman who decides to become a surrogate mother after much hesitation. While she takes her time to give her nod to be a surrogate mother to the child of a foreign couple, the latter eventually decide against having the child. Mimi thinks of abortion but being attached to the baby now, she is in a dilemma.
The movie is based on the Marathi film Mala Aai Vhhaychy!, which won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Marathi. The film was also remade in Telugu as Welcome Obama in 2013, much before Mimi.
Apart from Kriti, the movie stars Pankaj Tripathi, Sai Tamhankar, Supriya Pathak and Manoj Pahwa in pivotal roles.
Mimi is now available on Jio Cinema and Netflix India.
